Greetings!
Please read on for this week’s news!
Registration for Next Year’s Classes
Since class registration for next year opened a few weeks ago, I have been receiving many questions about law classes to register for. Thus, I thought I would pass on that information to all of you! To that end, I’ve attached the list of selected law-related classes at CMU I’ve put together to this email. While not all classes on that list are on next year’s schedule, most of them are.
This is also a great time to consider your choice of major (for those who haven’t signed one), second major (if you are looking for one), and/or first or second minor(s). Law schools want to see rigor in your academics, meaning that double majors and minors are extremely beneficial. And CMU has several majors and minors that are made up of many (or even all) law classes, so you can prepare for law school while taking classes that improve your law school applications!
One such minor is the Public Law minor, which just rolled out last year. It’s been very successful so far, and we are adding new classes to it all the time. I’ve attached the current list of classes to this email. If you have any interest in public interest law, and/or adding a law-based minor or second minor to your resume, I would be happy to discuss the Public Law minor with you. Just let me know!
If you need a class that is not offered next year for a major, minor, or certificate within the SPSJPS (including Public Law), please talk to me about potential substitutions. I can also let you know about future law classes being planned and scheduled, if you will be here past the 2025-2026 academic year.
I hope this additional information helps you figure out which law classes to take! If you have any follow-up questions, or would like advice on how to plan out your law classes next year and beyond, please feel free to reach out and/or set up an advising meeting!
Quick Note on PSC/SOC 365 Online
For those of you taking (or considering) the Public Law minor, or just wanting to take a Criminal Law class, we will be offering a new online section of PSC/SOC 365 Criminal Law in Spring II 2026. It is NOT on the schedule yet, but it should be soon, so I wanted to let you know that it will be there as an option if you can’t take PSC/SOC 365 in person next fall or if you are an online-only student.
Law School Applications Update
As the current application cycle draws to a close over the next couple of months, I wanted to provide an update on the numbers. As I mentioned way back in the fall semester, applications to law school have been up significantly this year; a trend that has continued to the point that they are now up over 20% across all law schools, and are even higher at particular schools.
This means that many of you are still waiting to hear from schools you applied to, and many of you may be waitlisted (or even rejected) when you may not have been in years past. If you are still waiting to hear, be patient as law schools are trying to navigate the increase in applications without increasing their incoming cohort sizes. If you are anxious about where you stand or what you should do with the responses you’ve already received, I am happy to meet with you to discuss. Feel free to set up an advising meeting anytime.
That’s all for now! Be sure to reach out with any questions!
Kyla
